Three hydroponic systems we design for Nigeria

NFT — Nutrient Film Technique

Best for: Leafy greens, herbs, lettuce

A thin film of nutrient solution flows continuously through sloped channels. Roots sit partly in the channel, partly in air. Low water usage, easy to clean, and well-suited to Nigerian temperatures when shaded properly.

Startup cost: From ₦40,000 for a home-scale 50-plant system.

DWC — Deep Water Culture

Best for: Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers

Plant roots suspend directly in oxygenated nutrient solution. Simple to build with locally available buckets and air pumps. Excellent for fruiting crops that need high nutrient uptake and strong root development.

Startup cost: From ₦30,000 for a 10-plant home system.

Media Bed

Best for: Root vegetables, beginners

Plants grow in an inert medium — expanded clay, gravel, or coco coir — that is flooded and drained periodically. The most forgiving system for beginners and the easiest to source materials for across Nigeria.

Hydroponics in Nigeria: FAQs

Yes. We design systems around Nigeria's power reality. NFT systems can run on small inverters or solar. DWC systems need minimal aeration — a small 12V air pump handles most home setups. We specify backup solutions as part of every system design. Most home hydroponic setups consume less power than a single standing fan.
Hydroponic nutrients are available from specialist agro-input dealers in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Enugu. We include a vetted supplier list in every system design package. Some nutrients are imported; others are compounded locally. Our nutrient plan specifies alternatives when imported products are unavailable.
A lettuce NFT system can produce its first harvestable crop in 21 to 28 days from transplanting seedlings. For tomatoes and peppers, first harvest comes at 60 to 90 days. Most clients in our Starter Package recoup setup costs within three to five harvest cycles depending on crop choice and local market pricing.
Not necessarily. Many home hydroponic setups in Nigeria run under shade nets rather than full greenhouse structures. A shade net reduces temperature and protects crops from heavy rain damage. A full greenhouse improves climate control and pest exclusion, but is optional for starting out. We advise on the right level of shelter based on your location and crop.
