The Concept

Farm upward, not outward.

A vertical farm stacks growing trays or channels on metal frames, one above another. A 10 sqm floor area with 3-metre ceilings can hold five growing layers, producing as much as a 50 sqm flat-bed farm.

The system uses either natural light near windows, artificial LED grow lights, or a combination. Nutrients are delivered through a hydroponic circuit — NFT or drip — that runs through each layer.

For Nigerian city dwellers with limited outdoor space, vertical farming converts a spare room, a corridor, a rooftop shade structure, or a commercial unit into a working farm that produces year-round.

Simple vertical columns of growing pods suspended near a window. Uses ambient sunlight. Suitable for herbs, lettuce, and microgreens. Low power requirement.

Freestanding towers with nutrient channels running vertically. Each tower holds 20 to 40 plant sites. Multiple towers multiply output without increasing floor area.

Power Considerations

Designing for Nigeria's electricity situation

Vertical farms that depend entirely on grid power are not practical in most Nigerian cities. Our designs account for this from the start.

Window farms and tower systems near natural light need no grow lights at all. For indoor rack systems, we specify LED grow lights by wattage and calculate battery or inverter capacity needed to run them during power cuts.

A 20 sqm indoor vertical farm using full LED lighting typically requires a 2–3 kVA inverter with battery backup. We include solar sizing options for clients who want full independence from the grid.
